The starting point for the project is to, in broad cooperation with representatives from academia, business and the public sector, investigate how both electricity and food can be produced on the same land in an efficient manner. Tests from other countries show positive results, but knowledge is needed about how agrivoltaics can work in region Skåne. The plan is to design and build a physical test facility in Skåne, in order to investigate and demonstrate in practice how agriculture and solar electricity production can be effectively combined in Skåne conditions.

An important part of the project will be to demonstrate, create and spread knowledge to actors promoting business and, by extension, to companies in both the energy and food industries with suggestions on how the conflict of interest between the production of food and solar power on Skåne farmland can be handled.

The main purpose of the project is to demonstrate and evaluate how agrivoltaics can be conducted efficiently in region Skåne.

Project objectives

  • Gain knowledge about which crops are suitable to grow in combination with agrivoltaic systems and how these should be designed to function in the farmer's everyday production.

  • Gain knowledge about production and economy for electricity and crops with agrivoltaics, compared to traditional agriculture and conventional photovoltaics installations on ground.

  • Gain knowledge of how national and international policies, regulations and support systems for both solar installations and agriculture affect the possibilities for permits and profitable business models, as well as, if necessary, make suggestions for adjustments to national regulations in order to better take advantage of the opportunities with solar farming.
