Sustainable preschool

Preschool has a crucial role in the work for sustainable development. In the latest revision of the National Curriculum for the Swedish Preschool, sustainable development has been included and highlighted as an important part of preschool values and objectives.

This means that the work on sustainable development in Swedish preschools needs to be clarified and anchored in a research base.

Within the research project, the focus will be on studying leadership, development of knowledge and practice in relation to education and teaching in preschool, with a particular focus on education for sustainability.

Background

Preschool has a crucial role in the work for sustainable development. In the latest revision of the National Curriculum for the Swedish Preschool (Skolverket, 2018), sustainable development has been included and highlighted as an important part of preschool values and objectives. This means that the work on sustainable development in Swedish preschools needs to be clarified and anchored in a research base. The research project with its four sub-studies is carried out in a R & D programme with 300 participants. Within the research project, the focus will be on studying leadership, development of knowledge and practice in relation to education and teaching in preschool, with a particular focus on education for sustainability. The research project is carried out through qualitative studies with elements of quantitative research using methods such as collection of documents, interviews and a survey.

External members in this research project is Ingrid Pramlig Samuelsson, Professor and Ingrid Engdahl, Senior Lecture at the University of Gothenburg.

Aim with the research project:

The aim is to develop further knowledge about the work on sustainable development at different levels within preschool and to contributes to new knowledge in the field of early childhood education for sustainability.
