Objectives
The objective of the course is to broaden the student's viewpoint, generate new knowledge and encourage reflection on design projects and the role of the project manager. The course will provide tools, both theoretical and practical, to work on design projects with varying content, time spans and complexity. It will provide specialised knowledge of the significance and potential of creativity for design processes and idea generation as well as the role of the designer and the design project from a societal perspective with its inherent challenges and opportunities.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1. identify and describe different roles in design projects
2. explain and apply different phases in design projects
3. practically apply learnings about project management in the area of design
4. critically analyse design processes in a societal context and sketch innovative solutions
5. understand the significance and possibilities of idea development and creative methods and be able to apply this knowledge in process and production work
Course content
The course will provide knowledge of different models for how design projects can be conducted and which phases, roles and methods are characteristic of projects with varying conditions. The course also covers project management, planning and follow-up. The role and importance of creativity in design projects is studied throughout the design process, not least in terms of idea generation, methodological development and production. The course gives students the opportunity to build up their own toolbox of creative methods for idea development, process and realisation. Different presentation and accounting formats for project communication are explored and questions about ethics in design projects are discussed with a focus on societal issues. The goal is that the course is linked to real needs, assignments and projects where the student achieves innovative design solutions through a solid focus on the design process and practical work.
Specific requirements
60 credits from completed courses in Information Design, of which 30 credits are from specialisation courses and 30 credits from general information design courses.
Examination
Written assignment (INL1), 6 credits, assesses intended learning outcomes 1, 2, 4 and 5, grade Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with credit (VG)
Laboratory session (LAB1), 1.5 credits, assesses intended learning outcome 5, grade Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Laboratory session (LAB2), 3 credits, assesses intended learning outcomes 1, 4 and 5, grade Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Project (PRO1), 4.5 credits, assesses intended learning outcomes 1-5, grade Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
Grade
Pass with distinction, Pass, Fail
Interim Regulations and Other Regulations
The course overlaps completely with ITE321 Project Management for Design Projects, 7.5 credits and ITE308 Creativity and Ideas, 7.5 credits.
This course can be included in the qualification requirement for higher education credits in the specialisation Spatial Design.
