Objectives
The objective of the course is to broaden the student's perspective, generate new knowledge and stimulate reflection on design projects and the project manager/leader role. The course will provide tools, both theoretical and practical, for working in design projects with varying content, scope and complexity. It provides in-depth knowledge of the importance and potential of creativity for design processes and idea generation as well as the role of the designer and design project from a societal perspective and context with its challenges and opportunities.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:
1. identify and describe different roles in design projects
2. explain and apply different phases in design projects
3. practically apply knowledge of project management in the design area
4. critically analyze design processes in a community context and outline innovative solutions
5. understand how ideas develope and the meaning and possibilities of creative methods and be able to apply this knowledge in process and production.
Course content
The course provides knowledge about different models for how design projects can be conducted and what phases, roles and methods are characteristic of projects with varying conditions. The course also deals with project management, planning and follow-up. The role and importance of creativity in design projects is studied throughout the design process, not least in terms of idea generation, method development and production. The course gives students the opportunity to build their own toolbox of creative methods for idea development, process and realization. Various presentation forms for project-communication are explored and issues related to ethics in design projects are discussed with a focus on social issues. The aim is to link the course to real needs, assignments and projects where the student achieves innovative design solutions through a strong focus on the design process and creative experimental efforts.
