About programme syllabus

The programme syllabus applies to the entire education period, starting with the academic year and the semester you started your education. The programme syllabus contains goals for the programme, contents and arrangement, but also requirements for special qualifications, etc.

Outcomes

The Master’s Programme in Engineering Mathematics is intended to meet the increasing need, in the industry, society and different engineering areas, for employees with a mathematical education. The programme thus aims at giving students a good knowledge base for work in a broad range of companies as well as other private and public organizations working with and developing technology. Examples of areas where advanced knowledge of mathematical methods and modelling are in high demand include information technology, the internet and computer technology, telecommunications, medicine and biotechnology, electrical engineering, robotics, as well as energy and environmental engineering.

The Master’s Programme in Engineering Mathematics leads to a one-year (60 credits) or two-year (120 credits) master’s degree in the main field of study Mathematics/Applied Mathematics at Mälardalen University. The objectives specified below are based on the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100, including the changes in SFS 2006:1053, annex 2).

Knowledge and Understanding

On completion of the degree programme the student shall:

For a Degree of Master (60 credits)

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main field of study Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, including both an overview of the field and specialised knowledge in certain areas of the field, particularly interdisciplinary applications of mathematics, especially within technology, as well as insight into current research and development work, and
  • demonstrate specialised methodological knowledge in the main field of study Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.

For a Degree of Master (120 credits)

  • demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the main field of study Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, including both broad knowledge of the field and a considerable degree of specialised knowledge in certain areas of the field, particularly interdisciplinary applications of mathematics, especially within technology, as well as insight into current research and development work, and
  • demonstrate specialised methodological knowledge in the main field of study Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.

Aptitudes and Accomplishments

On completion of the degree programme the student shall:

For a Degree of Master (60 credits)

  • demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations even with limited information,
  • demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate issues autonomously as well as to plan and, using appropriate methods, undertake advanced tasks within predetermined time frames,
  • demonstrate the ability in speech and writing to report clearly and discuss his or her conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which they are based in dialogue with different audiences, and
  • demonstrate the skills required for participation in research and development work or employment in some other qualified capacity.

For a Degree of Master (120 credits)

  • demonstrate the ability to critically and systematically integrate knowledge and analyse, assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations even with limited information,
  • demonstrate the ability to identify and formulate issues critically, autonomously and creatively as well as to plan and, using appropriate methods, undertake advanced tasks within predetermined time frames and so contribute to the formation of knowledge as well as the ability to evaluate this work.
  • demonstrate the ability in speech and writing both nationally and internationally to clearly report and discuss his or her conclusions and the knowledge and arguments on which they are based in dialogue with different audiences, and
  • demonstrate the skills required for participation in research and development work or autonomous employment in some other qualified capacity.

Ability to Evaluate and Assess

On completion of the degree programme the student shall:

For a Degree of Master (60 credits and 120 credits)

  • demonstrate the ability to make assessments in the main field of study Mathematics/Applied Mathematics informed by relevant disciplinary, social and ethical issues and also to demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research and development work,
  • demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used, and
  • demonstrate the ability to identify the personal need for further knowledge and take responsibility for his or her ongoing learning.

Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English, which includes all teaching, examination and literature, etc.

Contents

The Master’s Programme in Engineering Mathematics is a two-year natural-science/engineering programme within mathematics/applied mathematics, with engineers and other students educated in technology constituting important target groups. It enhances the students’ knowledge in mathematics and its technical applications. The programme comprises an obligatory part in mathematics/applied mathematics, worth 82.5 credits. This part includes a degree project. The remaining 37.5 credits can be chosen within mathematics/applied mathematics and other engineering subjects. It is possible to finish the programme after one year, and students can, upon completion of the courses and a passed degree project, apply for a one-year master’s degree. For a one-year master’s degree, 45 credits in mathematics/applied mathematics are mandatory within the programme.

The mandatory courses constitute the mathematical core of the programme and guarantee, upon completion of the programme, the attainment of the above-mentioned learning objectives for a one-year master (60 credits) and a two-year master (120 credits), respectively. The elective courses support and enhance the quality of the students’ attainment of the objectives of the degree and of the programme, and they prepare for the choice of specialization and the focus of the degree project. The final mandatory course is either a degree project worth 30 credits in mathematics and its applications (for the two-year, 120-credit master) or a degree project worth 15 credits in mathematics and its applications (for the one-year, 60-credit master). The programme focuses on preparing the students for problem-solving in working life, and the assigned reading has been chosen to support that focus.

Teaching and learning within the programme take the form of lectures, seminars, project assignments, lessons, and lab work. Students are expected to invest time in group work and individual studies, apart from the scheduled activities. Courses will be examined through written and/or oral final exams and/or continuously during the course, e.g. through seminar reports, presentations and hand-in assignments.

The programme consists of courses divided according to year of study as indicated below.

Choices within the program

For every student, an individual study plan will be written in conjunction with the programme coordinator, in order to ensure that the requirements for a degree will be fulfilled. Students enrolled in the programme are guaranteed a place in the above-mentioned courses, mandatory as well as elective ones, for a total of 30 credits per semester in the case of full-time studies. Students who have already studied corresponding courses will be offered the opportunity to choose courses outside the recommended curriculum. The choice of a course presupposes that the student is eligible for it.

University degree

The degree programme is so designed that the studies will lead towards fulfilment of the requirements for the following degree(s):

  • Master of Science (60 credits) in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics
  • Master of Science (120 credits) in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics

If the programme contains elective or optional components, or if a student chooses not to complete a certain course, the choices made can affect the possibility of fulfilling the degree requirements. For more information about degrees and degree requirements, consult the local degree regulations which are published on the University website.
