Literature lists
Course literature is preliminary up to 8 weeks before course start. Course literature can be valid over several semesters.
Objectives
The aim of the course is to provide a historical perspective on British and American literature, as well as further breadth and depth in literary analysis and academic writing in a literary context.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students are expected to:
1. describe main eras, genres and works in British and American literature
2. apply knowledge of literary and historical periods and their distinguishing features to the reading and analysis of individual literary works
3. use scientific sources and relevant methods in interpretations of literary works in speech and writing
Course content
- overview of the history of British and American literature
- literary genres and canonical works
- introduction to research and methods in literature studies
- academic writing in a literary context
Specific requirements
15 credits from English 1 including at least 3 credits from Literature 1.
Examination
OBN1, Compulsory attendance, 1 credit, concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
OVN1, Exercise, 1 credit, online test concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
SEM2, Seminar, 1 credit, oral presentation concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL2, Written assignment, 1.5 credits, concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN1, Written examination, 3 credits, concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a passing grade on the course, assignments need to be completed in idiomatic and stylistically appropriate English.
For Pass with distinction on the course as a whole, the student must have earned that grade for 4 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

Interim Regulations and Other Regulations
In accordance with Regulations and Directions for Examination Matters at First and Second Cycle at Mälardalen University, students who have been registered on each course are offered three opportunities for retests (in addition to the regular retests that are scheduled within the framework of the course being given the last time) during the next two upcoming semesters after the course was given the last time. After the three examination sessions have been offered, the course will be discontinued.
