Objectives
The course aims at developing students' ability as information designers to verbalize and problematize their design processes. The course aims to deepen students' knowledge of fundamental parts of research processes relevant to information design - including scientific theories and methods, scientific writing and source criticism. The course therefore also aims to be preparatory for graduate work in information design.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. critically review and argue for the choice of theories and research methods in relation to problems in information design
2. both verbally and in writing use relevant concepts for the research process
3. demonstrate an understanding of and critically discuss and evaluate strategies for design work with research efforts
Course content
The course gives students the opportunity to reflect on scientific aproach to design processes. The course, particular emphasis the development of the participants' independence and critical ability to analyze and discuss scientific statements and design processes.
Specific requirements
75 credits of completed courses within Information Design, of which 37.5 credits from specialization courses and 37.5 credits from general information design, including the course Science and design 7.5 credits, or corresponding.
Examination
Group assignment (GRU1), 1 credit, examines the learning objective 3, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Written assignment (INL1), Individual assignment, 3 credits, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
Seminar (SEM2), Individual assignment, 1 credit, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
