Objectives
The overall aim of the course is to be able to understand and use Human Centered Design methods. Define and problematize theoretical concepts in human centered design and related areas. The course will emphasize on theories and methods for design process and design research. In the course the students will work with problems raised within an organisation or the society.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. Relate and analyze key concepts in a human centered design process
2. Perform a human centered design driven process in a project
3. Reflect on the inclusion of users in a specific context and situation from a theoretical and practical perspective
4. Analyze and argue for design solutions throughout the process based on scientific literature and human centered design theories
5. Form relevant conclusions and recommendations both conceptually and practically
Course content
In the course, students are practically involved in human centered design, both through exercises in seminars and through a project. The practical experience is based on and related to theories in user involvement and human centered design. In the seminars, students work with specific user involvement methods and relate them to theory. The project is based on a specific challenge, and the user needs are included in the whole process and solutions are iterated. In the end of the course the students will present a design solution including an artifact, and an individual report related to the student's own contribution in the project and relevant scientific literature.
Specific requirements
150 credits in optional subjects. In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.
Examination
Seminar (SEM1), 2 credits, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) (examines learning outcomes 1 and 3)
Promemoria (PM01), 1 credit, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG) (examines learning outcome 4)
Project (PRO1), 4.5 credits, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG) (examines learning outcomes 2, 4 and 5)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
Grade
Pass with distinction, Pass, Fail
Interim Regulations and Other Regulations
The course overlaps 6 credits with ITE408 Project course in co-creation from a Human Centered Design perspective and 6 credits with ITE400 Project course in co-creation from a Human Centered Design.
