Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide the participants with basic knowledge of how an Industry 4.0 system can be built up and run as well as an overall understanding of which technologies that can be included. The course will provide the participants with insight and understanding of the 4th Industrial revolution and how it will impact on the industry.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student shall be able to:
1. Describe and show understanding of the characteristics of the 4th Industrial Revolution and digitalization.
2. Describe the impact of digitalization on the industry.
3. Describe the major technology areas within Industry 4.0 and be able to evaluate challenges and possibilities related to these.
4. Describe possible future scenarios in production based on new technologies within Industry 4.0.
5. Demonstrate the ability to carry out a practical work to theories and design of an Industry 4.0 system.
6. Demonstrate the ability to individually and as group member perform and present project and seminar assignment both orally and in writing.
Course content
* Characteristics of the 4th Industrial Revolution and digitalization
* Introduction to Industry 4.0 and main technologies
* The impact of digitalization on industry
* Challenges and possibilities with Industry 4.0 technologies and future scenarios
* Design of an Industry 4.0 system
Specific requirements
30 credits in completed courses in mechanical engineering, production engineering, product and process development, computer engineering and/or computer science or equivalent.
Examination
Seminar (SEM1), 1,5 credits, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) (examines learning outcomes 1-3 and 6).
Project (PRO1), 2,5 credits, marks Fail (U), or Pass (G) (examines learning outcomes 3-6)
Laboratory work (LAB1), 1 credit, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G) (examines learning outcomes 3 and 6)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
