Objectives
The objective of the course is that the student acquires deepen knowledge of research methodology and shows the ability to frame a research approach that includes methods for data collection and analysis relevant for field of innovation and design. The course also aims to acquaint students with current research in the field of innovation and design.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. independently search for, compile, critically review and analyse research on innovation and design with the aim of formulating a research approach,
2. give an account of deepen orientation in and use of research methods related to the research approach that are relevant in the field of innovation and design,
3. analyse empirical data related to relevant theory and clearly present as well as discuss conclusions and the knowledge and arguments underlying them,
4. develop, plan and present a research project with deepened research approach which includes qualitative and/or, quantitative methodology, as well as critical reflection on selected methods and collaborations,
5. demonstrate the ability to identify their need for additional knowledge and the ability to take responsibility for their further knowledge development in innovation and design.

Specific requirements
Research Methods in Innovation and Design 1, 7,5 hp.
In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given in entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.
Examination
Written assignment (INL1), 4,5 credits, examines the learning outcomes 1-3, marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG)
PM(PM01), oral and written, 3 credits, examines the learning outcomes 4-5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
