Objectives
This course builds upon and enhances previous knowledge of literary analysis and criticism, and provides additional knowledge of North American 19th- and 20th-century literature. The course further provides an introduction to ecocriticism as a field of research. An additional objective is continued training in scientific writing in the field of literature.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- define and describe key concepts within ecocriticism
- read, analyze and interpret literary texts from different periods
- read and discuss examples of literary theory and literary criticism
- reflect upon and describe ecocritical research methods
- plan and carry out a limited ecocritical study
Course content
- North American literature, both canonical works and modern texts, as well as selected examples of theoretical and applied ecocriticism
Tuition
The teaching and learning activities comprise seminars, tutorials, assignments and presentations, including some ICT components. Participation in all scheduled teaching activities is mandatory.
The course or parts of the course can also be offered as distance education via a web-based learning platform. Even in this case, mandatory meetings may occur.
Specific requirements
52.5 credits English, of which 30 credits English 1 and 22.5 credits English 2, or equivalent.
Examination
Assignments: essay (INL1), 2.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
Assignments: portfolio of oral analyses documented in writing[TS1] (INL5), 5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
