Objectives
The objective of the course is for students to acquire applicable knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to
1. apply basic grammar rules and idiomatic vocabulary in spoken and written English
2. demonstrate a knowledge of basic grammatical terminology
3. use dictionaries and other language aids as tools for continuous language development

Tuition
Teaching and learning take place in English, in the form of lectures, seminars, and various kinds of exercises, and are partly based on ICT.

Examination
OBN1, Compulsory attendance, 1 credit, attendance at scheduled activities concerning learning outcomes 1-3, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
INL2, written assignments, 2 credits, oral and written assignments concerning learning outcomes 1 and 3, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
ÖVN1, Exercises, 1 credit, web-based exercises concerning learning outcomes 1-2, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
TEN1, Written examination, 3.5 credits, examination concerning learning outcomes 1-2, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
For a Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, students must have earned that grade for INL2 and TEN1.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.

This course overlaps in part with the courses Academic English, Academic English for Degree Projects, Technical English as well as English from a Contrastive Perspective and cannot be included in a degree together with any of these.
