Citizenship, Activism and the City: The Invisible and the Impossible
New York: Routledge, 2017
Objectives
The course aims generally to elucidate and weigh the consequences of new city planning for the Swedish City's politicians, civil-servants and street-level-bureaucrats as well as its citizens and denizens. The course focuses on:
- Residential, class and ethnic segregation in the Swedish City
- Political polarization in the neighbourhood setting
- Citizenship issues and neighourhood effects
- "What ought the City do?"
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student ought to be able to:
- Have en improved understanding of big issues in Swedish urban politics
- From different social and political science perspectives critically and independently approach city-related problems such as segregation, gentrification and exclusion.
- Have a more structured modus operandi when describing and analyzing Swedish city politics, administration and citizenship
Course content
The course syllabus focuses on the City as three units of analyses: the neighbourhood, city and municipality. Here the course reflects over and analyzes the relationships of power that govern the City.
Tuition
The course takes the form of lectures and guest-lectures. During this time the student will choose and be assigned with a problem either related to city politics, its administration or its citizenry (INL). This assignment will be presented and defended at a seminar (SEM1) near the end of the course. Since the course is not just aimed at students, but even civil servants, politicians and other concerned actors (housing companies, the Swedish Tenants' Association, Delmos, etc.) a second seminar (SEM2) will take place where we can use a common (scienfific) language to address segregation. The course is complete after a "home" exam (HEM).
