Objectives
The aim is to deepen the student's capacity for critical thinking and problem analysis and obtain a subject-related specialisation in an area within the field of environmental engineering by applying knowledge and skills acquired in the programme. The aim is also to prepare the student for possible future research.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. Show both deep and broad knowledge within environmental engineering
2. Know about research and development activities within the area of the degree project
3. Critically, independently and creatively identify, formulate and manage complex issues
4. Co-operate with supervisors and other stakeholders
5. Create, analyse and critically evaluate different technical solutions
6. Plan and with adequate methods perform qualified tasks within defined boundaries
7. Critically and systematically integrate and apply knowledge, theories and relevant tools for solving environmental engineering problems, even with limited access to information.
8. Reflect over how the results of the degree project can contribute to sustainable development.
9. Make judgements based on relevant scientific, social, and ethical aspects and show awareness of ethical issues in research and development.
10. Orally and in writing present and discuss results, and the knowledge and arguments they are based on.
11. Independently and in a critical way perform a scientific opposition on results of others.
Course content
The course consists primarily of an independent project that will have its main body in the field of environmental engineering. The project includes writing a technical report and an oral presentation of its findings and conclusions. In addition to the independent work, the student will conduct an oral opposition on another degree project.
Tuition
Web-based seminars, independent work, supervision, opposition, written and oral presentation of the conducted work via the Web
Specific requirements
A Bachelor's degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to at least 180 credits with a major in engineering or science, and at least 45 credits completed courses in environmental engineering at advanced level and 7.5 credits mathematics. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course B/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.
Examination
Project (PRO1), 29 credits, grades Excellent (A), Very good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Insufficient, complementary work possible (Fx), Insufficient (F), learning outcomes: 1-10.
Seminar (SEM1), 1 credit, grades Excellent (A), Very good (B), Good (C), Satisfactory (D), Sufficient (E), Insufficient, complementary work possible (Fx), Insufficient (F), learning outcomes 8, 9, 10, 11.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
