Objectives
The course aims to give students the opportunity to acquire applicable knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation and thereby develop their ability to express themselves in English in speech and writing. To continuously develop their teaching role, students are also expected to acquire knowledge of language didactics and a practical familiarity with digital tools to support learning.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students are expected to:
1. account for and apply the grammatical rules of English in speech and writing
2. account for and apply rules for English pronunciation
3. independently use printed and/or digital dictionaries and other tools as instruments for continual language development
4. express themselves casually, clearly and in a varied manner in standard spoken and written English
5. account for central language didactic theories and concepts and how these are reflected in policy documents and in teaching
6. reflect on teaching and learning in English, based on current policy documents and current subject didactic research
7. show examples of how digital tools can be used to support teaching and learning
8. identify teaching strategies for sustainable development

- English grammar with application exercises
- English phonetics with pronunciation exercises
- Knowledge of vocabulary and dictionaries
- Language didactics, including how digital tools can be used to support teaching and learning
- Field studies linked to field days
Specific requirements
30 credits from the primary education (years 4-6) teacher programme, which must include the following:
- 3.5 credits Introduction to Teaching and Learning: Public Education and Teachers' Work for Teachers in Compulsory School Years 4-6
- 10 credits Swedish for Teachers in Compulsory School, Years 4-6 and
- 7.5 credits Mathematics for Teachers in Compulsory School, Years 4-6
Examination
OBN1, Compulsory attendance, 1 credit, compulsory attendance at scheduled teaching and learning activities concerning learning outcomes 1-4, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
INL1, Written assignment, 3 credits, written assignments: spoken and written production, as well as vocabulary knowledge and dictionary use concerning learning outcomes 1-4, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL2, Written assignment, 3 credits, written assignments: language teaching and regulatory documents, including field studies related to field days concerning learning outcomes 5-8, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
SEM1, Seminar, 2 credits, seminar: language teaching and regulatory documents, including field studies related to field days concerning learning outcomes 5-8, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN1, Written examination, 2 credits, written examination: grammar concerning learning outcome 1, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
TEN2, Written examination, 2 credits, written examination: phonetics concerning learning outcome 2, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
OVN1, Exercise, 2 credits, web-based exercises: phonetics and grammar, concerning learning outcomes 1 and 2, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
To receive the grade Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student needs to have earned that grade on at least 10 credits.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
