Objectives
This course will focus on cross-cultural management. We shall examine several central concepts including culture, business and management. You will also examine the major theories of the concept of culture and learn how to make analyses of different situations by carrying out a case study and a group project.
Another purpose is to develop personal skills concerning written presentations; critical and analytical thinking; information search, and; scrutinizing material.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students should be able to:
1. Explain and understand concepts such as cultural diversity, business culture and cross-cultural management;
2. Demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity when evaluating different alternatives concerning a company's culture in certain contexts by applying theories and models from the course literature;
3. Describe issues, problems and possible solutions regarding ethics, gender and sustainability in the subject area of cross-cultural management;
4. Constructively review and provide collegial responses to other students' assignments;
5. Present oral and written arguments in an objective, linguistically correct and reliable manner;
6. Demonstrate skills and abilities to independently plan, execute and report tasks, both individually as well as in groups.
Course content
The course deals with concepts, models and theories in the contemporary field of cross-cultural management and provides perspectives and tools for practical application as well as theoretical analysis. The course is based on flexible learning through individual and group assignments.
Tuition
Teaching takes place via a learning management tool and is structured around lectures, discussions, individual and group assignments. No physical meetings.
Specific requirements
30 credits in Business Administration where at least 22.5 credits must be finished when the course starts.
English equivalent to a TOEFL test result of at least 575 with TWE score 4.5 (PBT), 213 with Essay Rating 4 (CBT) or 90 with TWE score 20 (iBT) or an IELTS test score for academic purposes with an overall band score of 6.5 and no band score below 5.5.
Examination
Individual assignment (INL1), 3hp, grade A-F (covers learning outcomes 1, 3, 5, 6)
Group assignment (GRU1), 3hp, grade A-F (covers learning outcomes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6)
Individual online-exam (HEM1), 1,5hp, grade A-F (covers learning outcome 1)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
