Objectives
The purpose of the course is to increase the students' knowledge in the field of applied statistics. The course will illustrate how to reach statistically justified conclusions based on common statistical methods, such as statistical inference, analysis of variance, correlation and regression. The course will provide opportunities to become familiar with the concepts of understanding statistics and challenging assumptions.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. Discuss the role of statistics in engineering and science
2. Explain various specific situations where statistical inference may commonly occur
3. Implement and interpret confidence intervals and significance tests
4. Explain situations in which the analysis of variance (ANOVA) is appropriate and implement and interpret one-way ANOVA with the assistance of computer software.
5. Perform and interpret correlations and simple linear regressions

Specific requirements
120 credits of which 90 credits engineering and/or natural science and 7,5 credits mathematics. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.
Examination
Assignment (INL1): 1 credit, grades: 3, 4, 5 (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 4)
Digital examination (HEM1): 1 credit, grades: 3, 4, 5. (Learning outcomes 1-5)
Seminar (SEM1): 0,5 credits, grade Passed (G) (Learning outcomes 1-5)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
