Objectives
The aim of this course is to develop competence in the use of discrete event simulation by acquiring knowledge through theoretical understanding, hands on exercises, and participant workshops.
The objective of this course it to support the improvement of industrial processes that involve complex change through the use of discrete event simulation.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. design simulation models of production systems making use of a systems perspective, apply simulation concepts, and understand the relationship among system elements
2. build simulation models of a production system that applies the principles of data collection and analysis, develop accurate models and employ modeling strategies
3. experiment with changes in simulation models of a production system by analyzing scenarios, document activities and apply simulation knowledge in a case study

Specific requirements
40 credits in engineering/technology and at least 2 years of work experience in full-time from relevant area within industry. In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.
Examination
Project (PRO1), 2 credits examines learning objective 1, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
Laboratory work (LAB1), 1 credit examines learning objective 2, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Assignment (INL1), 2 credits examines learning objective 3, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
