Course literature is preliminary up to 8 weeks before course start. Course literature can be valid over several semesters.
Objectives
The aim of the course is for the student to further enhance and develop musical and instrumental/vocal skills and knowledge, and to further develop the his/her own artistic expression to, as an artist, become even reflective and independent.
Learning outcomes
After finished course the student is expected to be able to:
1. musically and technically use and perform with the own instrument based on analysis, awareness of methods and self-criticism, this also in relation to others
2. perform an extensive and for each student technically and musically very demanding repertoire from different musical styles
3. show deepened understanding of demands concerning professional auditions for musicians, with deep understanding of the own self-image.
4. show ability to identify personal need for further knowledge and develop the own competence
5. show a level of skill and knowledge that is required to independently be active in a professional context
Course content
- Instrumental and vocal technical instructions
- Musical interpretation
- Masterclass – performance of repertoire with teacher/instructor in front of other students

Tuition
The course consists of individual lessons in main instrument and group lessons during masterclasses. In certain cases, main instrument lessons can also be group lessons.
Specific requirements
A minimum of 35 credits in Main Instrument on university level which can be attained through the courses Main Instrument 1, 15 credits, Main Instrument 2, 15 credits and Main Instrument 3, 15 credits or equivalent.
Examination
SEM1, Main instrument, 11 credits, performance in individual main instrument lessons concerning learning outcomes 1-2 and 4-5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
SEM2, Masterclass, 1 credit, performance in masterclass concerning learning outcomes 1-5, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
SEM3, Collaborative work, 3 credits, performance in individual lessons in interpretation concerning learning outcomes 1-2, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G).
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
