Objectives
-Give a broader understanding of the product as a concept and what holistic functional, ecologically sustainable, aesthetic and ergonomic product values mean.
-Provide in-depth understanding of how products can be efficiently developed as stand-alone devices and as a component of systems that provides long-term value for businesses, users and the surrounding community.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
1. summarize and reflect on the differences and similarities between development of goods, of value proposaks, and of systems for value delivery
2. summarize and reflect critically on and in seminar discuss existing product models, tools and process steps.
3. analyze, theorize, create and implement process and tools in an actual company or in research related project assignments
4. document and argue for the process and the result of a product development project
5. orally present and argue for the process and the result of a product development project
6. understand how an effective product development process can be developed in a company
Course content
The course is built around an independent project that is connected to an ongoing business- or research-oriented project assignment or potential research project within Product- and Process Development. The course content thus comprises product development processes and tools with a view to the entire lifecycle of a product, as well as the analysis, theorizing, adaptation, and application of processes and tools for the creation of user interfaces in a realistic, commercially viable or research-oriented project.
Tuition
Teaching and learning take place by means of lectures, seminars, independent literature studies, and a project assignment.
Specific requirements
22.5 credits on the advanced level in Product- and Process Development.
In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.
Examination

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
