Course syllabus - Production System Development

Objectives

The purpose of the course is to will gain knowledge about the development of industrial production systems for the manufacturing industry. In addition, the course will provide basic insights into and an understanding for the need to focus on the development process as one way to achieve an effective and efficient production system – how this is described in theory as well as it is implemented in an industrial context.
 
 
 
 
 

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student shall be able to:

1. demonstrate knowledge about and be able to describe processes for production development as well as different tools and methods that can be used during the development of production systems
2. demonstrate skills in describing and analyzing how different production development activities and decisions affect the possibility to realize production systems with high performance
3. demonstrate an ability to describe how a global contexts impacts the development of production systems
4. have knowledge of methods that are used during product development to analyze and improve a product's manufacturability
5. demonstrate the ability to carry out and relate a practical work to theories of  production development
demonstrate the ability to individually and as a group member perform and present project and seminar assignments, both orally and 6. in writing and to critically and constructively provide feedback on such presentations

Course content

The course covers the activities that are carried out and decisions made during the development of the production system that affects the possibilities to achieve production systems with high performance. The course also addresses methods and approaches which can be used to make production development working in a global context and in a cost effective way.
 

- Development of production system: system and process perspective, development processes, methods and approaches for system development, evaluation, etc.
- Realization av production systems: planning and carrying out of implementation, hand-over of the production system to operations, evaluation

The course requires continuous and active participation both during and alongside the scheduled lectures. Studies are conducted both in groups and individually.

Specific requirements

Completed the courses Competitive production systems 7,5 credits and Industrial process development 7,5 credits. In addition Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.

Examination

Seminar (SEM1), 1,5 credits, (examines the learning objectives 1-3 and 6), Marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Project (PRO1), 2 credits, (examines the learning objectives 1, 2, 5 and 6), Marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Written examination (TEN1), 4 credits, (examines the learning objectives 1-4), Marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
 

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
