Objectives
The course broadens the perspective on product development and production by contributing to enhanced knowledge about environmental and other sustainability aspects that are related to industrial activities.
Learning outcomes
After completed the course, the student shall:
1. display knowledge regarding how a company can consider environmental and other sustainability aspects related to industrial business activities
2. display knowledge regarding how environmental and other sustainability aspects relate to activities that are carried out in a supply chain
3. be familiar with methods and tools that can be used to consider environmental and other sustainability aspects related to industrial business activities
4. demonstrate skills of describing the sustainability and life cycle concepts
5. demonstrate skills of describing, analysing and provision of improvement ideas for a product’s and a production system’s environmental performance
6. demonstrate ability to penetrate and analyse empirical or theoretical material that focuses on sustainability aspects related to product development and production
7. demonstrate ability to individually or in a group carry out and present project or seminar assignments in written forms or orally
Course content
The course covers the environmental aspects and other aspects of sustainability impact and can be handled in industrial operations, with particular focus on industrial product development processes.
The course includes the following elements:
- The concepts of sustainability and life cycle
- Sustainable supply chains
- Consideration of environmental aspects and other aspects of sustainability within product development
- Consideration of environmental aspects and other aspects of sustainability within production and production system development
- Circular systems including business models, re-manufacturing, etc.
Tuition
Teaching is carried out via seminars and a project assignment.
Specific requirements
Completed courses of at least 60 credits in Product- and Process Development of which at least 15 credits is on advanced level. In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.
Examination
Seminar (SEM1), 3 credits, (examines the learning objectives 1-4), Marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Project (PRO1), 4,5 credits, (examines the learning objectives 5-7), Marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
