Objectives
The course aims to give students insight into the concept of "business-based product and process development" and skills in using models and tools to identify what "theoretical or practical highest possible level” in product and process development can mean, as well as to take action that drives change towards the highest possible level.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student shall be able to:
1. produce methods to describe and understand a business-based product and process development
2. produce methods to identify and describe a company’s current situation regarding product and process development, and possible obstacles to reach a competitive business based product and process development
3. create an action plan for companies to approach a competitive business based product and process development, on the basis of a company's current situation
4. compile an individual in depth analysis within the field of business-based product and process development
5. show skill to document, argue for and orally present the above
Course content
The course has a broad perspective on the concept of business-based product and process development, but focuses on how to efficiently secure value when developing products and processes. This includes:
-Compiling of different metrics for competitive business based product and process development
-Arguing for what is theoretically and practically possible to achieve, regarding the level of competitive business based product and process development
-Arguing regarding what can be expected at this theoretically possible level
-Considering a company´s current situation regarding business based product and process development
-Analyzing of obstacles to driving development towards the theoretically possible
-Compiling strategies to achieve competitive business based product and process development
Tuition
Lectures, siminars, exercises and project work.
Specific requirements
Completed courses of at least 15 credits in Product and Process Development at an advanced level. In addition, Swedish B/Swedish 3 and English A/English 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish B/Swedish 3.
Examination
Project (PRO1), 5 credits, (examines the learning objectives 1-3 and 5), marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG)
Written assignment (INL1), 1,5 credits, (examines the learning objective 4), marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG)
Seminar (SEM1), 1 credit, (examines the learning objective 5), Marsk Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
