Objectives
The course aims to provide a basic orientation both in design history and scientific theory, and design processes in a scientific context.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course student shall be able to:
1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and ability to critically discuss, key trends in both design history in relation to information design and contemporary scientific theory (basic concepts and problems)
2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of, and ability to critically discuss and evaluate, different design processes
3. show practical and theoretical skills regarding elementary features of design processes in the main field based on scientific approach
4. write as well as orally verbalize information design processes based on scientific approach
Course content
During the course, particular emphasis is placed on developing students' critical analysis and discussion of the basic features of information design processes integrated with scientific thinking. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking and source criticism and management. The course as a whole gives the students the opportunity to reflect on the scientific aspects of information design processes. The course is both theoretical and practical and consists of lectures, seminars and teamwork.

Examination
Group assignment (GRU1), 1,5 credits, (examines the learning objective 1), Marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Written assignment (INL1), 2,5 credits, (examines the learning objectives 2-4), Marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG)
Seminar (SEM1), 3,5 credits, (examines the learning objectives 3 and 4), Marks Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with Distinction (VG)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
