Objectives
The course aims to provide basic knowledge in object-oriented programming and program development. Special emphasis is placed on practical programming in an object-oriented language, including programming of larger programs. Among other things, the course provides a good basis for further studies in object-oriented and component-based software development.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:
Understand, and be able to account for central object-oriented language mechanisms such as classes, objects, messages, inheritance and dynamic binding,
account for how a larger program can be divided into suitable classes that work together,
practically develop programs by applying and utilizing the object-oriented class library and framework,
independently be able to program simpler event-driven window-based programs and
explain the advantages and disadvantages of the object-oriented paradigm when developing software.
Course content
Object-oriented programming: classes, objects and inheritance, dynamic binding and polymorphism, operator overlay, generic programming, use of class libraries, event-driven programming, graphical user interfaces, comparison of different object-oriented languages. Object-oriented analysis and design: introduction to a general object-oriented modeling language, class diagrams and interaction diagrams.

Written examination (TEN1), 1.5 credits, marks Fail (U), 3, 4 or 5.
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.
Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
