Objectives

The aim of the course is to give students insight in complexity of distributed software development and to make them familiar to work in distributed teams using and to some extent develop modern technology for distributed communication between developers.

Learning outcomes

After fulfilling the course, the student should be able to:
- work in distributed development groups, planning, designing and performing distributed development projects.
- understand and be able to provide conditions for successfully working in a multi-cultural environment
- inventory own competences and requirements to solve problem.
- get new knowledge aquired for the project based on the inventory and aftwards use it in the project.

Course content

The course contains of lectures (standard and invited) and project. The lectors include the following topics:
- Introduction to distributed software development
- Distributed development projects
- Designing distributed applications

The project assignments are given to distributed group of students. Different projects are defined. They are related to distributed, web-based development.

Specific requirements

At least 120 ECTS credits of higher education where at least 90 ECTS credits are in the area of computer science where at least 7,5 ECTS credits is about Java, C++ or another object-oriented language. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.

Examination

Project (PRO1), 7.5 credits, marks 3, 4 or 5

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
