AI in historical perspective: Insights from 50 years of technology studies in the social sciences

In this talk I will unpack fifty years of the study of technology within the social and economic sciences and use this to reflect on how we should be thinking about AI and its likely consequences for society, industry and politics. Is AI just another machine, or is it something more?

Chris Ivory is professor of Innovation Management at IDT. He has written about technology change, technology and work, innovation, the role of the client in innovation and project management. He is presently leading a large research project on the potential of industry 5.0 (human-robot relations) by exploring the changing nature of technical and managerial work in industry.

Knowledge about AI – what content makes a difference? A didactive perspective

The development of generative AI (e.g. LLMs) has been much discussed in recent years. Various applications are used by companies, authorities, and private individuals. The development seems to be proceeding rapidly and many considerations and decisions need to be made at several levels in society. Due to the above, a need for training in the field of AI has been identified, both in working life and as citizens. A response to this need is that in 2024 the Swedish National Agency for Education initiated a new subject, Artificial Intelligence, in upper secondary schools, with two courses building on each other. There was an urgent need for competence development of teachers in this subject. A first round of two courses that together provide 15 credits in the subject of AI has been given during autumn 2024 at a number of universities in Sweden (including MDU).

Although there seems to be consensus on the need for education about AI, it is unclear what should be included in the education. Various didactic questions about content are important but not clearly examined in relation to the development of education in upper secondary school and universities. And what knowledge is important for teachers, as well as for citizens? A further question is how should teaching be structured so that participants/students/pupils can acquire the knowledge? Should we develop “AI didactics”? These are some of the questions that form the basis of the ongoing pilot study which includes questionnaires and focus group interviews based on four courses at two universities. Preliminary results will be presented.
