The role of design in shaping sustainable futures

The 14th Design Thinking Research Symposium

DTRS14 11–13 June 2024 in Eskilstuna, Sweden

We are facing complex systemic changes related to globalisation, digitisation, and the need to reduce negative impacts on our environment.

Agenda 2030, and the UN’s scaffolding framework with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals, aims to eliminate poverty and hunger, realise human rights for all, achieve equality and empowerment for all women and girls, and ensure lasting protection for the planet and its inhabitants and natural resources. The Global Goals are designed to serve as an integrated resource that balances all three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, the social and the environmental. This means complexity, and we need to take a holistic perspective to make progress.

Hence, to achieve organisational and societal systems that work in tandem with the Global Goals, we also need to pay attention to various aspects that could contribute to sustainability.

The question that DTRS14 will focus on is:
What role could design play in the shaping of sustainable futures?
