In accordance with Section 12 of the Ordinance on Application Fees and Tuition Fees, the University may refund the whole or a part of the tuition fee if a student has paid the tuition fee but is no longer liable to payment in accordance with Section 5 of the Ordinance on Application Fees and Tuition Fees. The refund shall relate to the part of the study programme for which the student is not liable to payment.

The University may also refund the whole or a part of the tuition fee if a student for other reasons is no longer liable to payment in accordance with Section 4 of the Admission Regulations for Mälardalen University. A refund should in that case be made at the latest before the current academic year is finished.

In cases where a student who is required to pay tuition fees has paid for the semester for which deferment has been granted, no refund is normally made but the fee is valid for the semester immediately following the deferment period. A person wishing to commence studies after the period of deferment shall abide by the instructions in the deferment decision, i.e. re-register for the course of study programme for which deferral was granted, and enclose a copy of the deferment decision.

In cases where a student who is required to pay a tuition fee has paid for the semester for which leave has been granted, no refund is normally made but the fee is valid for the semester immediately after the leave of studies.

Due to the Corona pandemic MDU has, in line with the recommendations from the Association for Swedish Higher Education Institutions (in Swedish SUHF), decided to also refund the tuition fee to international students who cannot commence their education due to the following reasons:

  • that the education cannot be given
  • that the students can’t get a residence permit (stated in the admission regulations and is mentioned in the refund application form)
  • that the students are unable to travel (e.g. due to closed borders).

The entire instalment made for the first semester is refunded, without potential deduction for administrative costs.
Please note that no refund or reduction of the fee will be made due to the education having shifted from on-campus to distance teaching.
Declining the offer of an education must be made at the latest three weeks after the start of the course.
