Computer software accounts for an increasing share of the cost of developing new products. The features offered by hardware produced by competing companies are often quite similar. Computer software offers a means to differentiate products and offer features that competing products do not offers. The development of such software integrated in hardware products is increasingly distributed globally in industrial networks.

This research project aims, through survey and analysis of industrial networks used in the development of software integrated in hardware products describe and analyze the dynamics of these industrial networks and the consequences this has for the companies concerned. The aim is also to create a basis for analysis of the possible effects that outsourcing and offshoring of software development has for Swedish industry and possible strategies for success in this changing industrial environment.

A deeper understanding of the industrial dynamics of globalized industries provides opportunities for better efforts to promote innovations in terms of both goods and services. It provides a basis for companies to determine their strategic directions and for authorities to set industrial policies.

The research project is part of the research program Economic aspects of computer software development.
