Degree and degree certificates
Here you will find information about degrees and graduation at MDU and how to apply for a degree certificate. This is a certificate to show that you have gained knowledge and skills in a specific area and at a certain level in your studies.
Degree certificate
The digital degree certificate is a PDF file with an e-stamp. This means that the document cannot be changed after it has been retrieved from Ladok. The stamp verification can be done by uploading the document on the Ladok verification page, for which there is a link on your degree certificate. It’s also possible to verify the e-stamp through Adobe. The validity period of the e-stamp is 2 years, after which a new PDF file must be downloaded for the degree certificate to have a valid e-stamp.
How to apply for a degree certificate
You can apply for a degree certificate at first-cycle, second-cycle and third-cycle level in Ladok for students.
If your application is for a Degree of Licentiate or Degree of Doctor, and you have defended your licentiate or doctoral thesis before 1 October 2024, a completed and signed application form must be attached to your application in Ladok.

Frequently asked questions about the exam
When will I receive my degree certificate?
At the moment, we have slightly longer processing times.
Our goal is that the processing time for complete applications must not exceed two months. Depending on the workload, the processing time varies throughout the year, which means that during the summer and early autumn, we have longer processing times.
If we have questions while processing your application, we will contact you.
You can monitor your application in Ladok.
If I apply for my degree have I then used up my points for any future degrees?
The credits included in your qualification are not used up but can be used again in a new qualification. The condition for obtaining a new qualification is that new qualification requirements must be met. Courses from a degree that make you qualified for the second-cycle level cannot be included in a degree at Second-cycle (Master’s level) if they are required to fulfil the qualification requirements in the qualifying degree.
Can courses taken at other higher education institutions in Sweden and/or abroad be included in my degree?
Completed courses at university level that do not overlap with other courses can be included in the degree. Courses from studies abroad must be credited, email the Student Centre for more information.
- Email studenttorget@mdu.se
What does overlap mean?
When two or more courses have the same or partially the same content, they overlap with each other. The partially overlapping credits will not be counted towards your degree but will be deducted from the total sum of credits.
How will I get my degree certificate?
From February 2024, we will issue digital degree certificates, and not in paper format. The digital diploma consists of a PDF file with an e-stamp. This can be done repeatedly as needed.
What happens if I lose my degree certificate?
From February 2024, we will issue digital degree certificates. If you have such a degree issued, you can download the degree certificate again and print it if desired via Ladok for students. This can be done repeatedly as needed.

If an employer wishes to have your degree verified, you can provide a code to Ladok where the employer can access information about your degree and its content.
Can I appeal a refusal?
If you have received a refusal for your application for a degree certificate, you can appeal the decision. The Higher Education Appeals Board, (ÖNH), is an authority tasked with reviewing appeals of certain decisions made by the University. Information on how to proceed can be found in your refusal decision.
Examination regulations
The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) determines which higher education institutions (HEIs) are authorised to issue degrees. In the Higher Education Ordinance, the common rules and requirements for degrees can be found. Then each HEI can decide on local rules, for example regarding which main fields of study should exist and how each degree should be named. This means that the qualification requirements can vary between HEIs, but there are always common rules that apply to everyone.
On 1 July 2007, major changes were implemented in higher education in Sweden, which means that Sweden's degree system was reformed for example. To apply the current local System of Qualifications, at least one course must have been completed after 30 June 2007.
All higher education is divided into Bachelor’s (first cycle) Master’s (second cycle) and Doctoral (third-cycle) levels. The degrees you can apply for all follow the same categorisation:
- First-cycle (Bachelor’s level). Higher education degree, Degree of Bachelor and a professional qualification.
- Second-cycle (Master’s level). Degree of Master (120 credits), Degree of Master (60 credits) and a professional qualification
- Third-cycle (Doctoral level). Degree of Licentiate and Degree of Doctor

Diploma Supplement
Diploma Supplement
The Diploma Supplement is an attachment that is included with the degree certificate from all state universities and university colleges in Sweden. The attachment describes the education and its place in the Swedish education system and must facilitate the recognition of university education abroad, as well as make it easier for university graduates to move between different countries to study or work. The Diploma Supplement must be used together with the degree certificate.
Qualification requirements that will be discontinued
The University can make a decision that a degree will be discontinued, and then a transition period begins that determines how long the degree can be issued before it disappears completely.
Sometimes the requirements for a degree can also change, and if the requirements are considered to become stricter, a transition period will come into effect for how long a degree can be issued according to the previous requirements.
Requirements that will disappear during 2024
The below degrees have been discontinued or have revised requirements and will be phased out during 2024. You must have started your studies before a certain date to be eligible to apply for your qualification.
More information about the requirements and transition periods can be found in the System of Qualifications.
- Master of Science in Engineering degree - Industrial Economics, according to the older provisions, will be discontinued on 30 June 2024.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Specialist Nursing, specialising in district nursing, will be discontinued on 31 December 2024.
