Credit transfer for previous studies or professional experience

If you have previous studies or knowledge gained through professional experience that you believe correspond to courses or modules offered at MDU, you may apply for credit transfer once you are a registered student with us.

You may apply for credit transfer for:

  • previous studies at another higher education institution
  • studies abroad (studies abroad must always be credited)
  • courses not fully completed but assessed as fulfilling full or partial course requirements
  • professional experience.

You do not need to apply for credit transfer if:

  • you have completed a course at another higher education institution, or at MDU, that you only wish to include in your degree
  • you are enrolled in a programme and the course you wish to replace with previous studies is an elective in your programme syllabus
  • you have previously completed a course at MDU which is now included as a compulsory course in your current programme.

Before applying for credit transfer

For advice and guidance prior to submitting your application, please contact a study counsellor.

E-mail: studievagledning@mdu.se

It is important that you complete your application correctly for it to be processed. If your application is incomplete or incorrect, it will be closed, and you will need to submit a new one. Please read the information carefully to ensure you understand the requirements and which documents to include.

  • MDU does not provide advance decisions regarding credit transfer.
  • A credit transfer during ongoing studies affects the number of credits you are registered for and may therefore influence your eligibility for student finance.
  • Example: If you are admitted to 30 credits this semester and 10 of them are credited, you will only study 20 credits this semester. You are responsible for informing CSN of any changes to your study situation.
  • If you are granted credit transfer for part of a course or programme, you are not entitled to participate in that part of the education. This means you cannot attend lectures, seminars, or examinations for the credited component.
  • No grade is awarded for credited studies, as no new assessment is made. If you receive credit for parts of a course, this may affect your opportunity to achieve a higher final grade in the course.
  • If you have completed semesters 1–3 of a programme at another university, this does not automatically qualify you to begin semester 4 at MDU. Programmes leading to the same degree may vary between institutions.
  • You cannot include both completed courses and credited courses covering the same content in the same degree – this would result in an overlap.
  • Example: If you apply to credit completed courses 1 and 2 as equivalent to MDU courses A and B, you cannot include all four in your degree.
  • If you have not received a decision by the start of a course, you are advised to begin and follow the course while waiting for the outcome.

Recognition of prior experiential learning refers to knowledge and skills gained through professional work or non-university education. As a student at MDU, you may apply to have your knowledge and competences assessed if you believe they correspond to a course or part of a course.

Please read under “Attachments to include” for details on the additional documents required when applying for credit transfer based on professional experience.

Studies abroad must always be credited. This is done once your studies are completed and official transcripts have been issued by the foreign university.

When submitting your credit transfer application, please specify the main subject area at MDU to which your foreign studies should be credited. The main subject area must correspond to the content of the course you completed abroad. Choose a subject from the list “Main subject areas for degree”. If you cannot find a corresponding area, select Other subject in your application.
