Checklist for new students

There are a few administrative steps you need to take to start your studies at MDU. Please follow them in the right order and you'll be all set.

Checklist: Get ready to start your studies

Once you have received your offer from antagning.se, you must accept your place before you can register. If you have been admitted without a reply requirement, you can skip this step and move on to step 2. It is important that you read your offer letter carefully, as it explains what applies to you specifically.

If you change your mind about your choice of studies, you should decline your offer. This allows the place to be offered to another applicant.

Reception service (for international students)

As a service to you the University organises reception service for international students. On 25 and 26 August between 16–18, in the main entrance of Campus Västerås, you will be able to pick up your key from representatives from Bostad Västerås, meet University staff and current students. All there to welcome you to Sweden and MDU. You will also have the option to get transportation to your accommodation.

The Preview

Join us at The Preview the week before the semester starts! We’ll go through everything you need to know so you can feel confident, excited and well prepared before your studies really get going.

The Welcoming

We want you to feel truly welcome with us! At the start of every semester, you can count on being invited to a great afternoon.

The Student Associations' rookie period

To help you get to know your new classmates, the Student Union at Mälardalen University together with its Student Associations organise a rookie period during the first weeks of the semester.

If you have been admitted and have accepted a course or programme, you need a student account to log in to computers, email and other IT services.

For the autumn semester

If you are starting in the autumn semester, you can order your account from 10 August.

For the summer semester

If you are taking a summer course, you can order your student account one week before the course starts.

How to order your student account

If you don't have a Swedish personal ID number

If you don't have a Swedish personal ID number please email the Student Centre for assistance. Important! Please use the same email address that you used when you applied to MDU. Enclose a copy of your passport page which has your details and photo and please write "Student account" as email subject. You will get instructions within 24 hours (work days).

E-mail: studenttorget@mdu.se

If you have a Swedish personal ID number

If you have a Swedish personal ID number you can order the student account on your own. It may take up to 30 minutes for your account to be created.

After you have ordered a student account, you need to activate MFA for it to work on your own computer or mobile phone. Read more in step 6 of the checklist.)

If you have been admitted to a course or programme, you must register for them, otherwise you will lose your place.

When to register

Summer semester

Registration for the summer semester opens one week before the course starts and remains open until the Sunday of the same week the course begins.

Autumn semester

Registration for the autumn semester opens on 10 August and remains open until the Sunday of the same week the course starts.

Later in the semester

For courses that start later in the semester, registration opens one week before the course starts and closes on the Sunday of the same week the course begins.

How to register

Log in with your student account and register for your courses in Ladok.
If you have been admitted to a programme, you must register for the course(s) within the programme. Once you are registered for the courses, you will automatically be registered on the programme.

If you are admitted after the registration period has closed, you can contact Studenttorget for information about what applies in your situation.

studenttorget@mdu.se

Studenttorget can provide guidance, but registration after the registration period has closed cannot be guaranteed.

Remember to check that your contact details in Ladok are up to date when you register.

The MDU card is a personal card that you use to access the university premises in Eskilstuna and Västerås and to print documents. It also serves as a ticket for the free buses between the Eskilstuna and Västerås campuses.

You can order the MDU card after you have registered.

You do not need to order an MDU card if:

  • You will not be on campus in Eskilstuna or Västerås during your studies.
  • You do not need to travel on the MDU bus between Eskilstuna and Västerås.
  • You are studying on a contract programme. In that case, you should order a card that serves as an access card and library card via the teacher or secretary at your host academy.

For Swedish students

You can find the start date and location when you search for your course or programme. If you are a programme student, you will have both a programme start date and a course start date.

Tip! The student website contains information on how to find the literature you need, so it's a good idea to be prepared before you start!

For international students

For international students, the autumn semester 2026 begins on 31 August. Using the link below, you can search for your course or programme for information about location and times.

Tip! The student website contains information on how to find the literature you need, so it's a good idea to be prepared before you start!

To access your student email and other services connected to Microsoft 365 from your own computer or mobile device, you need to download and use the Microsoft Authenticator app. This is because MDU uses multi-factor authentication (MFA).

Finished with the checklist?

Awesome job! Have a look around here on the student website. There is a lot that you need to keep track of during your studies. How the Canvas learning platform works and how to register for exams, for example. Best wishes!

And again: Welcome!

Here we have collected welcome letters for the programmes. The welcome letters contain information from the programme managers.
