Checklist for new international students
There are a few administrative steps you need to take to start your studies at MDU. Please follow them in the right order and you'll be all set.
Checklist: Get ready to start your studies
1. Create your student account (from 13 Jan)
You need a student account to log into computers, access course material, get into your email and use other IT resources.
You who have a Swedish personal ID number can create the student account on your own.
If you don't have a Swedish personal ID number please email the Student Centre for assistance. Important! Please use the same email address that you used when you applied to MDU. Enclose a copy of your passport page which has your details and photo and please write "Student account" as email subject. You can send your email from 13 January, and will get instructions within 24 hours (work days).
You need MFA when you want to access your student account from a personal computer or a mobile device. Read more in step 7 of the checklist.

Email studenttorget@mdu.se (without Swedish personal ID number)
2. Register (13–26 Jan)
When you have created your student account with the help of the Student Centre you can register in the student database. You must register for the course or programme, otherwise you will lose your place. The registration for the spring semester 2024 is open between 13-26 January. Registration for courses beginning later in the semester opens one week before the course starts and closes on Sunday the same week as the course starts. If you are admitted to a programme, you must register for the course(s) within the programme, then you will be automatically registered on the programme and the place is yours.
3. Order your MDU card
The university card is a personal card that all students can get. You use it to gain access to the university premises in Eskilstuna and Västerås, for printing, borrowing books from the library, and other things. It also serves as a travel pass for the free buses between the Eskilstuna campus and the Västerås campus. You order your university card once you have registered for your programme or course.
4. Reception and introduction
As a service to you the University organises reception service on Sunday 19 January, between 12-14. In the main entrance of Campus Västerås you will be able to pick up your key from representatives from Bostad Västerås, meet University staff and current students. All there to welcome you to Sweden and MDU. You will also have the option to get transportation to your accommodation.
We want you make sure you feel really welcome and get the best possible start of your studies. Don't miss the introduction that we call The Welcoming, 23 January at 17-19 at Campus Västerås. And do check out the introduction videos, that will help you get a smooth start to your studies.
5. Spring semester start (20 Jan)
For international students, the spring semester 2025 begins on 20 January. Using the link below, you can search for your course or programme for information about location and times. As a programme student, you will have both the start of the programme and the course. Information about which courses are included in your programme can be found in your programme schedule or in Ladok.
6. Activate multi-factor Authentication (MFA)
To access your student email and other services connected to Microsoft 365 from your own computer or mobile device, you need to download and use the Microsoft Authenticator app. This is because MDU uses multi-factor authentication (MFA).
Finished with the checklist?
Awesome job! Have a look around here on the student website. There is a lot that you need to keep track of during your studies. How the Canvas learning platform works and how to register for exams, for example. Good luck to you!
And again: welcome!
