Implementation of The Tidal Model as a possible means to promote participation and recovery and develop the culture of care in forensic psychiatric care
International research shows that the Tidal Model contributes to both improved quality of care and a better work environment for healthcare staff. In this project, it is being implemented at a forensic psychiatric clinic in Sweden.

The project, which is part of the SWEPROF research school and has a clear focus on patient‑centred nursing practice, is carried out in collaboration between Mälardalen University (MDU) and Region Västmanland. In the project, the Tidal Model—an approach to care that emphasizes person‑centred and recovery‑oriented practices—is being implemented within forensic psychiatric care. The project examines the attitudes of healthcare staff toward the model prior to its implementation, as well as their experiences of whether and in what ways it contributes to changes in care practices, care culture, and quality of care. Furthermore, the experiences of patients receiving care on wards where the model has been introduced are studied, and we will also follow how they assess the quality of care and their own health and recovery before, during, and after the model’s implementation. User involvement is central to the project, and the research group also includes a representative from the Swedish National Association PAR (Patients and Relatives in Forensic Psychiatry).
Project objective
The overall aim of the project is to implement a model for person-centered and recovery-oriented nursing in forensic psychiatric inpatient care, the Tidal Model (TM), and to explore whether this model can facilitate changes in the culture of care so that quality of care and patients' participation and recovery are favored.
