BREEMRES – Building a Research and Education Environment for Modern Renewable Energy Systems

To supply electricity to all people in the country is a key challenge for Mozambique. To improve the situation well educated professionals that can build a sustainable energy system for all is needed. Building Research and Education for Modern Renewable Energy Systems – BREEMRES – is a research training programme that will contribute to this important task by strengthening the academic education and research within the field of renewable energy and energy systems.

The main objective of the programme is to contribute to the establishment of inter-disciplinary research and education in a viable academic environment. Key activities are

• to contribute to the education of masters students
• supervision of PhD students
• establish an Energy Research Centre at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Mozambique.

The centre aims to be an active hub linking various actors from academia, government and private sectors. With support from the programme a two-year masters programme in renewable energy has been established, aiming for at least 10 students/year.

The research topics that the MSc and PhD students will address will deal with detailed mapping of renewable energy resources, and environmental consequences connected to their exploitation. Furthermore, the technical design and optimisation of smaller off-grid energy systems, and socio-technical effects of electrification be thoroughly investigated.

The long-term outcome of this project is a viable academic environment that independent of external support can graduate MSc and PhD students of high quality, able to contribute to the sustainable development of modern renewable energy systems in Mozambique.
