Background

The waste sector needs to optimize logistics and work processes that include collection, transport and treatment of waste and of various materials/resources. Improvements are also sought in communication and advocacy work to stimulate public and business awareness to increased sorting, recycling and a higher degree of reuse and waste prevention.

In this regard, data-driven development and new knowledge - via IoT solutions – may support change.

Sensors in dustbins and containers that signal the degree of filling may lead to a more efficient collection and transport routes. Data can also be used to provide feedback to customers/users so that they gain greater insights and opportunities to influence and change their waste management. Through the collection, processing and analysis of data on a larger scale and over a longer period of time - from different parts of the activity and from different geographical areas with specific characteristics - various patterns can be discerned which can be used to forecast, plan and optimize waste management in a better way than today.

However, BAIT specificity and approach is not just to look at IOT solutions as such. Our holistic approach implies to shift the focus from solutions to how actual waste management working practices and processes can be reconfigured and enhanced through IOT.

Project goal

The goal of the BAIT project is to conduct a preliminary study of how IoT can be used to improve waste management processes. The intent is first of all to increase the understanding of how IoT solutions can contribute to optimizing and streamlining waste management processes, as well as of increasing the waste management company´s ability and conditions to implement and use IoT solutions in its activities.

On a broader level, the aim is to develop knowledge about how the new technologies reframe working practices and methods, skills. Such factors are still relatively under explored in the domain of waste management.

The project contributes in the long term to the fulfillment of the Agenda 2030 goals, primarily Goal 11: Sustainable cities and communities and Goal 9: Sustainable industry, innovation and infrastructure.

Activities in the project:

  • Project planning, management and follow-up.
  • Inventory of ongoing IoT projects in the industry
  • Mapping and description of business parts potential use of various IOT solutions
  • Compilation and analysis of needs and potentials
  • Formulation of an IoT strategy.
  • Communication and dissemination of results
  • Kommunikation och spridning av resultatet
