Advisory Ethics Committee

The Advisory Ethics Committee has the University’s overall responsibility for working with matters of ethics within the University, and works on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor. The Advisory Ethics Committee serves in an advisory capacity to the University Management in questions concerning ethics.

The Committee works proactively with establishing clear ethical positions on questions of research, donations and collaboration. The work on the Committee also deals with producing documents and guidelines, and with helping researchers at the University in questions concerning research ethics. The Advisory Ethics Committee also offers support to the Vice-Chancellor in matters of suspicions of misconduct in research and other deviations from good research practice.

On 1 January 2020 the Vice-Chancellor decided to establish an Advisory Ethics Committee at MDU.

Areas of Responsibility for the Advisory Ethics Committee

  • Provide support to the Vice-Chancellor in investigating cases of suspected deviation from good research practice.
  • Provide support to the Vice-Chancellor and University management in the systematic work of promoting good research practice.
  • Conduct proactive work to prevent deviations from good research practice.
  • Maintain and promote skills enhancement in terms of research ethics and good research practice in the University.
  • Provide support to University administration in processing referrals.
  • Raise the profile of the University's work on good research practices internally and externally.

The Act on responsibility for good research practice and the examination of research misconduct (2019:504)

On 1 January 2020 a new act (2019:504) on responsibility for good research practice and the examination of research misconduct came into force. The act states that the individual researcher is responsible for compliance with good research practice in their research, at the same time as the HEI has the overarching responsibility for research being conducted in accordance with good research practice.
