This is a design-led programme for those who want to work as an Interaction Designer, Usability Designer, Change Leader, Project Manager or UX Designer, for example. Here you will learn to design technical interfaces, focusing on user experience. You will gain an understanding of how people perceive, process, and use information, as well as how social and cultural differences influence the design of technology.
Interaction design - information design in brief
Today, digital technical tools exist in most areas: healthcare, industry, public organisations, communication, and social media.
Interaction design is about designing interfaces that make the interaction between people and technology as functional as possible, from a person’s perspective, needs, and desires, and what is known as UX - user experience.
During the programme, you will learn how to build the conditions for a good user experience. You will gain an understanding of how people perceive, process, and use information, as well as how social and cultural differences influence the design of technology.
You will learn methods to create interactive storytelling as well as processes and project tools that can be used to develop interactive interfaces.
Main subject
Information Design is your main subject and you will gain expertise in various design and research methods. Jointly with other students in information design, you will take courses in:
- storytelling techniques,
- graphic formats,
- communication theories and
- theories about interaction, cognition and perception.
Specialisation
During the final year, you may specialise in areas such as programming, health and welfare technology, or accessible design.
At the end of the programme, you will have the opportunity to establish contacts with future employers during a ten-week-long placement within the industry.
You can also choose to study abroad.
Teaching
During the programme, you will work both individually and in groups. Some components take place in what is known as studio teaching, where you will have close communication with your teacher and fellow students. You will take several courses together with students from the other information design programmes, where you will be able to work on projects together with real clients from the private and public sectors.
Labs and workshops
You will have access to laboratory facilities with modern equipment. You will also have access to wood, metal, and prototype workshops with 3D printers. There are printer rooms for printing large images, a UX lab, and a black box studio where you can experiment with light and sound technology.
Contact with companies and organisations
You will have the opportunity to build networks and gain experience through guest lecturers and projects with questions from the private sector, authorities, interaction design companies and organisations. Therefore, parts of the programme will take place outside of the campus.
During your degree project, you will have another opportunity to cooperate and explore areas in close collaboration with companies and organisations. This can be done with local, regional, national or international stakeholders and parties.
You will also have the opportunity to complete your degree project abroad.
Jobs and the future
After finishing your studies, you will receive a Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Information Design with a specialisation in Interaction Design.
You will meet a job market where the use of digital products, systems, and services is increasing and accordingly, also the demand for skills in the interaction design area. Examples of job titles could be Interaction Designer, Usability Designer, Change Leader in Digitalisation Processes, Project Manager in Business Transformation, or UX Designer. The work is often carried out in teams or in close cooperation with other skills and developers.
You are also eligible to continue studying MDU's International Master's Programme in Innovation and Design.
Programme content
If you are a full-time student, you will study 30 higher education credits per semester. Some courses within a programme may be compulsory and some may be elective.
