Analytical Finance: A Broad Foundation, Personal Choice and Career Opportunities

Alexander Enbom is studying Analytical Finance with a specialisation in Financial Mathematics. He values the programme’s strong foundation in mathematical tools, the opportunity to explore different fields, and the flexibility it offers for both specialisation and future career paths.

Portrait of Alexander Enbom

Alexander values the opportunity to explore different areas within Analytical Finance, develop his mathematical skills and work towards a future career in finance.

When Alexander first started thinking about what to study, he knew that finance was the field he wanted to pursue. Analytical Finance therefore became his choice – thanks to its broad foundation and the opportunity to specialise in the third year of the programme.

The programme provides an extremely solid base and opens doors to a wide range of industries or further studies. What makes it particularly strong is that you can also focus on what interests you most. I really appreciated being able to choose my own specialisation, he says, continuing:

The programme is quite unique and not offered in many places in Sweden. Employers are also looking for mathematicians with financial expertise, and it feels like this education really gives me the freedom to shape my future career.

Student life and day-to-day studies

Alexander describes everyday life on the programme as varied, but well structured.

Some weeks are filled with lectures, others with exam periods or several assignments at the same time. The pace is higher than in upper secondary school and the level of responsibility is greater. But it’s also enjoyable – I get to focus on something I genuinely find interesting.

He also highlights the flexibility of the programme and the opportunity to explore different subject areas.

You get to study a range of subjects, such as mathematics, economics, business administration and computer science. That makes it easier to discover what suits you best. The programme opens doors to many different career paths, and you are able to try different areas before deciding where you want to specialise. I really value being able to shape my own future and gaining the tools to steer my career myself.

Challenging studies – but always achievable

Mathematics is a central part of the programme, and it is normal to feel uncertain at first.

If mathematics is something you feel nervous about, since it makes up a large part of the programme, I want to emphasise that the courses are designed to help you grasp the fundamentals. Each course starts with introductions and core concepts, which makes it easier to keep up and prevents you from feeling left behind, Alexander explains.

And yes, there are challenges along the way. I’ve failed three exams and had to resit them. At the time it feels like a setback, but you come back, retake the exam and pass, he continues.

I study a lot with friends who think in a similar way. We support each other in group projects and discuss ideas together. The lecturers are always approachable and pedagogical, which creates a sense of security and makes the studies both more enjoyable and manageable.

Looking ahead

After graduation, Alexander sees several possible paths ahead.

I would like to work with stock market–related areas, such as managing financial portfolios. At the same time, I’m considering continuing my studies with a master’s degree. It feels reassuring to have such a strong foundation. We study a lot of applied mathematics that can be used directly in financial markets, which gives you confidence regardless of which path you choose, he says, concluding:

I feel prepared and motivated for the future. Whether I go straight into working life or decide to continue studying, I know I have the skills required – and that feels very reassuring.
