Course objective

The aim of the course is to increase participants' knowledge and understanding of the third-cycle studies process, to develop their knowledge and understanding of academic discourse, and to develop their knowledge and skills in sharing their research with a broad audience through communication and commercialization.

  • Funding opportunities for doctoral students
  • Your career in research, building a CV and research portfolio
  • Research commercialization and exploitation.
  • The dissertation ( attendance to a licentiate or Doctoral dissertation defense)

Intented learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:

  1. understand how research is communicated to experts in their own and different subjects, as well as to the general public.
  2. understand formal process and requirements at MDU to defend their thesis.
  3. demonstrate insight into the possibilities and limitations of doctoral studies.

The intended qualitative targets in relation to the Higher Education Ordinance, appendix 2.

Competence and skills

For the Degree of Doctor, the doctoral student shall demonstrate

  • B6: the capacity to contribute to social development and support the learning of others both through research and education and in some other qualified professional capacity.

Judgement and approach

For a Degree of Doctor the doctoral student shall demonstrate

  • C2: specialised insight into the possibilities and limitations of research, its role in society and the responsibility of the individual for how it is used.

Teaching formats

The intended knowledge, competence and skills will be gained through attendance to lectures and seminars that include discussions and critical reasoning.

Examination

OBNl: Compulsory attendance, 1 hp (Learning outcomes 1-3)

SEMl: Attending seminars, 0.5 hp (Learning outcomes 1-2)

Grade

Examinations included in the course are assessed according to a two-grade scale, fail or pass.

Grades are to be decided by a teacher specially appointed by the university.

A person who has not passed the regular examination shall be given the opportunity to retake the test.

Requirements

To participate in the course and the examinations included in the course, the applicant must be admitted to doctoral studies.

Specific requirements

The course is suitable for recently enrolled doctoral students, and those that have not yet completed their mid-way- or licentiate seminar, or equivalent

Selection criteria

Doctoral students admitted to other higher education institutions may be admitted to the course, subject to availability. Selection of applicants will be made in accordance with the ranking below.
