Course objective
The aim of the course is to increase participants' intellectual autonomy and disciplinary rectitude, increase participants' knowledge and understanding of research, and to develop their competence and skills in what it means to perform third-cycle studies.
Course content
- Research fields, research methods and planning of research.
- Identify and formulate issues related to different projects, practices, and disciplines.
- Oral presentation of Doctoral projects.
- Introduction to academic writing, research communications, and networking.
Intented learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:
- discuss different projects, practices, and perspectives in third-cycle studies from different disciplines.
- individually and as a group member, perform and present assignments, both orally and in writing and critically and constructively provide feedback on presentations from peers.
- judge the appropriateness of research practices in different situations and different research disciplines.
- take charge of their own doctoral project

Knowledge and understanding
For the Degree of Doctor, the doctoral student shall demonstrate:
- Al: broad knowledge of the research field, and
- A2: familiarity with research methodology in general.
Competence and skills
For the Degree of Doctor, the doctoral student shall demonstrate
- B2: the ability to identify and formulate issues with scholarly precision critically, autonomously, and creatively, and to plan and use appropriate methods to undertake research and other qualified tasks within predetermined time frames and to review and evaluate such work,
- B4: the ability in both national and international contexts to present and discuss research and research findings authoritatively in speech and writing and in dialogue with the academic community and society in general.

For a Degree of Doctor the doctoral student shall demonstrate

Teaching formats
The intended knowledge, competence and skills will be gained through attendance to lectures and seminars that include discussions and critical reasoning.
Examination
OBNl: Compulsory attendance, 1 hp (Learning outcomes 1-4)
INLl: Writing assignment, 0.5 hp (Learning outcome 1-3)
Grade
Examinations included in the course are assessed according to a two-grade scale, fail or pass.
Grades are to be decided by a teacher specially appointed by the university.
A person who has not passed the regular examination shall be given the opportunity to retake the test.
Requirements
To participate in the course and the examinations included in the course, the applicant must be admitted to doctoral studies.
Selection criteria
Doctoral students admitted to other higher education institutions may be admitted to the course, subject to availability. Selection of applicants will be made in accordance with the ranking below.
