Course objective
The objective of this course is to provide doctoral students with the opportunity to improve their skills in academic publishing and communication. Furthermore, the course aims to help novice researchers to tackle the complex processes involved in publishing in international academic journals, including selecting suitable venues for publishing in their field, responding to peer-reviews and engaging in editorial and review work. The course also aims at equipping the participants with digital and critical skills in disseminating knowledge within and beyond academia through technology-enhanced tasks.
Course content
Academic publishing, journal selection, impact, and navigating the publication processes. Hands-on, technology-supported tasks for writing for impact and engaging in review work, international publication as a quality assurance and scholarly communication process.
Intented learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the doctoral student should be able to:
- use technological tools to identify and critically select a high-qualityinternational journal for their article and assess the demands it places ontheir writing and editing skills,
- demonstrate knowledge, discernment and skills in responding toacademic peer review,
- conduct critical peer-review and develop scholarly communication skills.

Knowledge and understanding
For the Degree of Doctor, the doctoral student shall demonstrate:
- A2: familiarity with research methodology in general and the methods ofthe specific field of research in particular.
Competence and skills
For the Degree of Doctor, the doctoral student shall demonstrate
- B4: the ability in both national and international contexts to present anddiscuss research and research findings authoritatively in speech andwriting and in dialogue with the academic community and society ingeneral
Judgement and approach
For a Degree of Doctor the doctoral student shall demonstrate
- C1: intellectual autonomy and disciplinary rectitude as well as the abilityto make assessments of research ethics
Teaching formats
Lectures, seminars, and workshops.
Examination
SEM: Seminar activities 2.5 credits, (learning outcomes 1-3).
Grade
Examinations included in the course are assessed according to a two-grade scale, fail or pass.
Grades are to be decided by a teacher specially appointed by the university.
A person who has not passed the regular examination shall be given the opportunity to retake the test.
Requirements
To participate in the course and the examinations included in the course, the applicant must be admitted to doctoral studies. Subject to availability, teachers at Mälardalen University that hold a doctorate can be offered to take part of the course.
