Innovation: Human capabilities and AI
AI is reshaping the conditions of professional practice, raising new questions about how people in different roles make sense of situations and exercise judgment in AI practice. This PhD course offers sharp analytical perspectives on how human capacity takes shape as the role of technology in work contexts evolves rapidly.
About the course
The course Innovation: Human capabilities and AI, supports the doctoral student in developing an advanced and interdisciplinary understanding of how emerging AI functions as a technological, institutional, and social condition that influences the possibilities for judgment, responsibility, and professional expertise in research, society, and working life. It also examines how these developments can act as drivers of innovation, recognising that AI can simulate and evaluate aspects of human capability but cannot replace human situatedness, embodiment, or accountability.
At the same time, the course supports the doctoral student in developing the ability to critically identify and theoretically articulate how norms, roles, and distributions of responsibility are reshaped. Doctoral students will also formulate research questions and empirical approaches that examine and illuminate AI’s concrete effects on professional practices and opportunities for innovation.
The course emphasises practice‑oriented inquiry and iterative analytical work, with the aim of strengthening analytical sharpness and identifying new creative and innovative applications, rather than technical system development.
