Course syllabus - Human Rights and Sustainable Development

Objectives

The course aims to provide an in-depth understanding of contemporary societal challenges and current research frontiers at the intersection of international politics, human rights and sustainable development.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student should demonstrate:

Knowledge and understanding:

1. broad understanding of current societal challenges and global power relations in human rights and sustainable development
2. in-depth knowledge of research findings at the intersection of international politics, human rights and sustainable development
   
   Skills and abilities:
3. ability to systematically integrate multidisciplinary knowledge on human rights and sustainable development
4. the ability to independently formulate, critically reflect on and address scientific problems related to human rights, sustainable development and the realization of these normative commitments at the global level
5. the ability to present in writing, and engage in dialog about, empirical conclusions and scientific approaches
   
   Judgement and approach:
6. ability to identify and problematize different conceptions of human rights and sustainable development
7. openness to the perspectives, experiences and arguments of others, and willingness to reconsider and argue for their own position

Course content

The course provides in-depth knowledge in the study of human rights and sustainable development.

The course introduces current research frontiers in the multidisciplinary study of human rights and sustainable development.

The course provides empirical knowledge about institutions, discourses, practices and actors relevant to the realization of human rights and sustainable development at the international level.

The course puts a particular focus on promoting understanding of global power relations and contemporary societal challenges.

Specific requirements

A university degree of at least 180 credits, with 90 credits in Political Science, or the equivalent. In addition English 6 or equivalent is required.

Examination

Seminar (SEM1), 2,5 credit points, grade G (learning outcomes 1,2,3,5,6,7).

Written assignment (INL1), 5 credit points, grade G, VG (learning outcomes 1,2,3,4,5,6).

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding a disability has the opportunity to submit a request for supportive measures during written examinations or other forms of examination, in accordance with the Rules and Regulations for Examinations at First-cycle and Second-cycle Level at Mälardalen University (2020/1655). It is the examiner who takes decisions on any supportive measures, based on what kind of certificate is issued, and in that case which measures are to be applied.

Suspicions of attempting to deceive in examinations (cheating) are reported to the Vice-Chancellor, in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance, and are examined by the University’s Disciplinary Board. If the Disciplinary Board considers the student to be guilty of a disciplinary offence, the Board will take a decision on disciplinary action, which will be a warning or suspension.
