Objectives
Energy systems are characterized by dynamic processes. Control and regulation techniques are used to manage and regulate dynamic processes. The purpose of the course is to understand the behaviors of dynamic processes and systems, describe basic concepts in control systems, introduce mathematical methods for the development and analysis of control systems for energy engineering applications, and implement basic controllers.
Learning outcomes
- independently carry out practical tests and theoretical analyses to identify dynamic systems
- understand and apply transform theory and transfer functions for analysis of dynamic systems
- model, simulate and analyze dynamic systems with computer programs such as Matlab and Simulink
- design and verify regulators for energy engineering applications
- implement and test controllers in a lab environment
Course content
Transform theory for dynamic systems. Transfer function. Methods for identification and modeling. Simulation. Frequency analysis. Regulation methods, PLC programming, PID and discrete controllers.

30 credits from an energy engineering program

Laboratory (LAB1), 2 credits, grade: Pass (G) or Fail (U). Learning outcome: 1, 5
Written examination (TEN1), 3,5 credtis, grade: 3, 4 or 5. Learning outcome: 1, 2, 4
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding disability study support, can request adaptions for the examination. It is the examiner who takes decisions on any adaptions, based on the certificate and other conditions.
