Objectives
The objective of the course is that students acquire further, in-depth knowledge of the development, principles, and working methods of modern health promotion, especially within the health-care sector and on the basis of the WHO´s, as well as national, public-health objectives. Students are further expected to be able to analyze, present, and discuss strategies relevant to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public-health work.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to be able to do the following in terms of :
Knowledge and understanding:
1 give an account of basic documents and principles concerning health promotion
2 explain the role of the health-care sector in health promotion
3 analyze health-related factors for the choice of strategies in health promotion
Skills and abilities
4 discuss the choice of strategies and models for health promotion
5 plan and present a health-promoting effort within the health-care sector
6 discuss assessment methods applicable to health promotion
Judgement and approach
7 evaluate current practice as well as scientific articles in the field
8 discuss and argue for health promotion in health care education
9 evaluate and discuss ethical aspects of health promotion
Course content
The emergence of modern health promotion
Basic principles and strategies in health promotion
Theories and models for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion
The arena perspective and its application in the health-care sector
Health promotion in health-care education
Social politics and policies with a focus on health
Current research on health promotion
Specific requirements
A completed Bachelor´s degree from an institution of higher education of three years or more, equivalent to at least 180 credits (180 ECTS credits) within the fields of public health or caring or nursing or medical science or equivalent. In addition Swedish course B/Swedish course 2 and English course A/English course 5 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 2.
Examination
Exercise. Written and oral presentation of group work on health promotion in the health-care sector in the students´ home country; corresponds to expected learning outcomes 1-5 and 9. Achievable grade: G., 4 credits, marks Pass (G)
Examination. Individual, written exam on core concepts, principles, and models related to health promotion, corresponding to all the expected learning outcomes. Achievable grades: G and VG.
A VG (Pass with Distinction) on the course requires a VG on TEN1. For additional information, please refer to the study guidelines., 3.5 credits, marks Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding disability study support, can request adaptions for the examination. It is the examiner who takes decisions on any adaptions, based on the certificate and other conditions.
