Objectives
The course objective is for the student to apply knowledge and skills acquired in the program independently and in time plan and execute a scientific research project in a chosen field of technology. Another aim for the student is to deepen his/her critical thinking and problem analysis in the field of industrial economics and prepare him/her for possible future research.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student will be able to:
- Systematically integrate knowledge within Industrial Economics acquired during the study program
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge in industrial economics with a chosen specialization including knowledge within research and development within the research field of the thesis
- Select, analyze and critically evaluate various technical / economical solutions and propose changes for example in products, work processes, structures or systems.
- Critically, independently and creatively identify, formulate and handle complex issues and limited information
- Independently identify needs of further knowledge
Plan and with research as well as with engineering methods perform a complex task within given framework - Orally, in writing and visually express arguments in a factual, linguistically accurate and credible way
- Communicate the findings to individuals and organizations both inside and outside the academy
- Independently carry out a scientific opposition of others results in a critical way
- Make judgments with respect to scientific, social , ethical and sustainability aspects as well as show knowledge about ethical aspect on research and development work
Course content
The course consists mainly of an independent thesis project focused on industrial economy. The course includes a scientific investigation and / or a development work, the writing of a report and an oral presentation of work results and conclusions. In addition to the independent work the student will perform an oral opposition on another degree.
Specific requirements
210 credits of completed courses, including 60 credits within the fields of computer science/energy engineering/product and process development. 52,5 credits in industrial engineering and 15 credits at advanced level and 7,5 credits scientific methods in industrial economics. In addition, Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3 and English course 6 or English level 2 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course 3 or Swedish level 3.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding disability study support, can request adaptions for the examination. It is the examiner who takes decisions on any adaptions, based on the certificate and other conditions.

The course replaces FOA402 Degree Project in Industrial Engineering and Management.
The supervision for the student is limited in time. If the paper does not pass within the given time frame for supervision, students are not entitled to an extended supervision but may continue on their own and come back for reassessment of their final version at a maximum of five occasions.
