Course literature is preliminary up to 8 weeks before course start. Course literature can be valid over several semesters.

Objectives

The aim of the course is to give students the opportunity to acquire an understanding of language education theories and regulatory documents, with a focus on English language education. The course further aims at raising students' awareness and knowledge of communicative competence and different aspects of language acquisition. It also provides opportunities for practicing communicative and didactic skills.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students should be able to:

  1. give an account of and discuss language education theories and relevant regulatory documents
  2. give an account of theoretical and practical aspects of communicative competence and the language skills a language learner needs to develop
  3. plan and carry out short teaching sessions aiming to enhance communicative competence
  4. communicate in a clear and adequate manner in speech and writing

  • Theories of teaching, learning, and second language acquisition
  • National and international regulatory documents, frameworks and perspectives (Skolverket, CEFR, etc.)
  • Communication and interaction in educational, academic, and non-academic contexts
  • Language skills
  • Field studies

Specific requirements

Current enrollment in the upper-secondary teacher education program.

Examination

SEM2, Seminar, 2 credits, active participation in all scheduled activities concerning learning outcomes 1-4, grades Fail (U) or Pass (G).
INL1, Assignment, 3.5 credits, reflective writing assignments concerning learning outcomes 1, 2 and 4, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).
INL2, Assignment, 2 credits, teaching-related activity concerning learning outcomes 1-4, grades Fail (U), Pass (G) or Pass with distinction (VG).

For Pass with distinction (VG) on the course as a whole, the student must have earned that grade for INL1 and INL2.

A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding disability study support, can request adaptions for the examination. It is the examiner who takes decisions on any adaptions, based on the certificate and other conditions.
