Objectives
The main purpose of this course is to develop competence and provide knowledge and toolsets to be applied in the context of optimization of production systems.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course the student should be able to:
- Describe the underlying principles of optimization theory.
- Classify optimization problems based on the case formulation.
- Evaluate the performance of production systems.
- Develop skills of utilizing state-of-the-art discrete event simulation software.
- Apply gained knowledge to solve real-world production optimization problems.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate and critically assess the findings of optimization related to performance of production systems.
Course content
The course content is divided into four modules:
- Introduction to Optimization Theory
- Evaluation of Production Systems
- Bottleneck Analysis of Production Systems
- Multi-object Optimization of Production Systems
Specific requirements
40 credits in engineering/technology and 2 years of work experience in full-time from relevant area within industry.
In addition, Swedish course B/Swedish course 3 and English course A/English course 6 are required. For courses given entirely in English exemption is made from the requirement in Swedish course B/Swedish course 3.
Examination
Individual Assignment (INL1), on optimization theory and classification, 1 credit, examines learning outcomes 1 and 2, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
Group Assignment (GRU1), on the optimization of a real-world production system using software, 4 credits, examines learning outcomes 3 - 6, marks Fail (U) or Pass (G)
A student who has a certificate from MDU regarding disability study support, can request adaptions for the examination. It is the examiner who takes decisions on any adaptions, based on the certificate and other conditions.
